Ready for Recruiting 3.0?

Jul 01, 2022

The pandemic created a perfect storm for the recruiting market. The talent shortage is forcing companies and talent to find innovative ways to bridge their connection. The future is Recruiting 3.0.

1- The quantum shift in the way we work

2- Companies facing the great resignation

3- Talent is pressing for purpose.

4- Recruiting 3.0

1- The quantum shift is here to stay. We are in a new reality. Flexibility challenges companies and talent equally, whether fully remote work or hybrid.

This quantum shift rebalanced the power play between companies and employees in favor of talent.

Yet both need to take a few additional steps toward each other.

2- Companies are waking up

I attended an HR conference at the FACC NY  and was stunned to hear so many heads of HRs talking about innovative solutions to retain and attract talent. They meant it, mainly because they don't have a choice.

They shared the following with authenticity:

  • We are putting compassion over compliance.
  • We are inviting colleagues to come as their whole selves.
  • We are equipping leaders to have empathy.
  • We must get comfortable with people leaving and offer options to come back after.
  • Being mission-driven is no longer sufficient; it must be personal and translated for the individual.

Never before have so many HR leaders talked about a return to humanity and compassion. In fact, HR are the ones who might need it the most; they are the frontline workers dealing with talent daily.

3- Talent know what they don't want!

There is a lot of talent looking for work, so why the crunch?

What I hear from most is the urgent need to weave purpose into their careers.

Employees want to believe in what they do, whether in the company's values, products, or community.

Individuals looking for purpose and new opportunities contribute to the boom in coaching. As a result, they are dedicating resources to upskilling, staying relevant, and learning to sell their professional potential to companies better.

4 - Recruiting's next frontier

Recruiting 1.0: Basic recruiting is job boards.

Recruiting 2.0: What we have now is companies luring talent with lofty values, yet employees feel they are a commodity, and some choose to resign.

Recruiting 3.0: this will happen when the relationship between companies and talent becomes less transactional and more personal. Companies will hire talent for their potential instead of focusing solely on resumes and past performance. And employees learn to share their most current and relevant skills and purpose.

"The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn."

Alvin Toffler

I purposely left Recruiting 2.0 to coach talent to be recruited for their potential and aligned with their purpose. The 3 steps are:

Learn to upskill and share your why.

Unlearn old mindsets to create space for new information.

Relearn to engage with a lighter, more current narrative.

The benefits they see with a bit of investment in their careers are striking and empowering.

Instead of being a commodity, they become active participants in their careers and future earnings.

And if companies can start investing in talent before hiring, I think we can solve the shortage of talent and even gain happy employees.

How wonderful would that be?
