Recruiters want to know your Achille's heel

Sep 14, 2022

I have one; you have one; it's what makes us human and likable.

And not being aware of it affects your career.

To make him invincible, Achille's mother dipped him in the Styx River, making his entire body invulnerable except for the heel where she held him—the proverbial Achilles' heel.

That's what recruiters and HR do: they look for your superpowers AND your heel!

Not to hold it against you, au contraire:

they are testing your self-awareness, so everyone enters the deal with eyes wide open.

Hiring becomes much easier if you know where your vulnerability lies.

I would never suggest you serve your weakness on a silver plate to the interviewer.

But when ignored, it becomes the elephant in the room.

And that awkwardness is why many people hate interviewing.

Of course, you should go to your interview with your favorite superhero attitude.

In fact, coaching is in essence raising your self-worth.

But to really boost your career, knowing where your weak spot is crucial to avoid that interview awkwardness.

To avoid using justification, over-explanation, or covering up with pretty bows.

Awareness is perhaps the most valuable superpower you can bring to an interview or networking event.

"The greatest thing in the world is to know how to belong to oneself," Montaigne

Awareness is the mirror you look yourself in before you walk out the door.

But with the years, there are things we just don't see anymore.

Awareness is flaky; we often fall into comfort zones because we can't think of everything all the time. Too exhausting unless you are Yoda.

But if you can't quite seem to figure out why your career is stuck, or if you have been cruising for 10 years and feel irrelevant, you might want to ask yourself, what is my Achille's heel?

Mine is when I "forget" to pull the brakes.

Thank you burnout for the lesson :)

Next week I will share what happens when your Achille's heel gets a hit...

With love,

Agathe
