The joy of Interviewing
Nov 02, 2022My biggest wish is for everyone to learn to sell their skills.
I have met too many competent talents who did not get the job because they were poor interviewers.
You can be a great marketer, retailer, etc., but you will miss out on valuable job opportunities if you don't know how to sell your skills.
The recruiting market is going through a significant reshuffle from the great resignation, "quiet quitting" to post-pandemic corporate restructuring.
There is a high likelihood of an interview in your future.
So I wanted to share the 4 essential pieces of advice I coach clients interviewing.
Applying these 4 parts will put you ahead of 95% of all candidates.
BTW, they also work wonders for networking.
1- Be Clear: Clarity is the most important quality you can have interviewing in 2022. Everyone has the memory of a goldfish -6 seconds- so anything wordy, vague, and confusing will get you immediately canceled.
Decide to share only your top 3 hard skills + 3 soft skills. No more.
2- Be Precise: if you are going to brag about your results, be explicit and zoom in by giving a specific example of what you did.
Follow the S.T.A.R. method, describe the Situation and the Task you were given, share the Actions you took, and list measurable Results.
3- Be Concise to grab your listener's attention. Think movie trailer and share the most critical moments of your career. It's not because people spend hours on Netflix that they want to hear about your internship from Season 1, your lousy boss from Season 2, etc.
You must be able to share your career's arc in less than 3 minutes.
Recruiters will ask for any additional information they need.
4- Be Yourself: Add Passion, Joy, and Curiosity. Being attuned with yourself, your emotions, and your personality is essential because the people you meet will often feel the energy you are emitting.
How you talk about your current job usually tells everything and the questions you ask. So do your research and spend ten minutes crafting your questions ahead.
Don't take it from me; Oscar Wilde said it better:
"It is absurd to divide people into good and bad. People are either charming or tedious." ~ Oscar Wilde
Much love,
Agathe
